As the mainstream media experiences a crisis of trust, and more information seems to come from the margins - how are marginalised people self-organising their own media to tell their own stories and challenge dominant narratives? This webinar brings together and explores two cases: the 'Madzines' produced by mental health service users and activists, and refugee radio established in Berlin.
Speaker Profiles
Helen Spandler is Professor of mental health studies at UCLan and a member of the ICSC. She is Managing Editor of 'Asylum: the radical mental heath magazine' and has a Wellcome Trust, Investigator Award in Humanities and Social Science (2020-2023) on 'Crafting Contention: the role of zines in contesting mental health knowledge and practice'. Fazila Bhimji is Senior Lecturer in Film & Media at UCLan and a member of the ICSC. She is the author of 'Border Regimes, Racialisation Processes and Resistance in Germany: An Ethnographic Study of Protest and Solidarity' (Palgrave 2020). Fazila's work explores the emergence of refugee radio in Berlin, in "There Is Empowerment in the Air: Media Activists Decolonise the Radio".
