An ICSC Webinar with Dr Jasber Singh, Associate. Professor, Centre for Agroecology, Water and Resilience / People’s Knowledge Group, Coventry University.
Socio-economic rights, including the right to food have been part of international law since the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights came into effect in the 1970s. Today, amidst rising food poverty, inequality and market failure, different social movements and institutions in the UK and around the world are applying pressure to make the right to food enforceable in domestic law and part of everyday practice. For this ICSC webinar Jasber Singh introduces and explores different dimensions of the demand for the right to food. Drawing on his recent work on food poverty and government immigration and asylum policy, the presentation examines the relationship between food insecurity, marginalised communities and universalist demands for the right to food and socio-economic rights.
About the Speaker Dr Singh’s recent co-authored work on this question includes ‘Food sovereignty, food security and the right to food’ in the Handbook of Critical Agrarian Studies (2021); ‘No recourse to public funds’ in the International Journal of Migration, Health and Social Care (2022) and the report ‘How Can The Right To Food Address The Needs Of Marginalised And Under-represented Groups?’ Mayors Fund For London / Coventry (2020). Jasber Singh has many years of experience as a practitioner and researcher in participatory methods and community engagement, working on projects on social and environmental justice at the local, national and international level. His interests include developing creative participatory action research approaches, using theatre and photography, to explore environmental justice, agroecology, decoloniality, anti-racism and youth participation. His research has involved developing approaches to ‘People's Knowledge’ and the dynamics of marginality and knowledge making in the ‘White-walled Labyrinth’ found in universities and other research institutions.
